Meet the Y60: the truck that will carry the next chapter
My Nissan Patrol Y60 needs work before it goes anywhere. Here is why I chose to rebuild it, and the plan for turning it into an off-road and overland rig.
Every overland story needs a vehicle. Mine is a Nissan Patrol Y60 — and right now it needs work before it goes anywhere.
That's the point. I don't want to buy a finished expedition truck. I want to fix this one, understand every part of it, and document the whole build here.
Why a Y60
The Y60 Patrol was built from the late 1980s to the late 1990s and earned a reputation as one of the toughest off-roaders of its era: solid axles front and rear on coil springs, simple mechanicals, and a body that can take punishment. It is old enough to repair with hand tools and strong enough for the south of Tunisia.
There's also a personal reason. My first business sold car parts. Rebuilding an old 4×4 is the most honest way I know to put that decade of parts and mechanics into practice.
The build plan
Phase 1 — Assessment. A full inspection: engine, cooling, gearbox, transfer case, axles, brakes, steering, chassis and rust. Nothing gets bought until I know what's actually wrong.
Phase 2 — Mechanical first. Engine service and repairs, cooling system, clutch and drivetrain, brakes and steering. Reliability before anything else.
Phase 3 — Suspension and tyres. Springs and shocks rated for a loaded truck on rough tracks, and all-terrain tyres that can handle sand and stone.
Phase 4 — Recovery and protection. Recovery points, sand boards, a compressor and the protection underneath that keeps a rock from ending the trip.
Phase 5 — Living and power. Storage, water, a place to sleep, and enough power to keep a laptop and cameras running far from a socket.
Phase 6 — The camera rig. Mounts and storage for photo and video, because the point of the truck is the photo project it's going to carry.
How I'll document it
Each phase gets its own entry: what broke, what it cost, what I'd do differently. Running SOS Auto Parts taught me how optimistic build budgets are — I'll publish the real numbers.
If you know these trucks and have advice, I want to hear it — get in touch.
